Abstract
Purpose: This one-day workshop, designed for 30-40 participants, explains revisions in the new manual for the ACLS, version 5, available in English and Spanish translations, which was guided by rigorous standards for tests and measures, current evidence, and review by experts.
Relevance to Congress Theme: The Allen cognitive disabilities model and Allen Cognitive Level Screen (ACLS) are being used more frequently by therapists in many countries (e.g. US, Canada, England, France, Sweden, Japan, Mexico, Argentina, Australia, Afghanistan) to evaluate learning potential and functional cognitive abilities for planning interventions that optimize participation in meaningful, culturally-relevant occupations with clients who have cognitive disabilities. With the occupational therapy profession’s emphasis on evidence-based, occupation-based and culturally-relevant assessments and interventions with global application, it is essential for therapists to have access to up-to-date developments in theory, research, and practice. This need has led to numerous requests by therapists around the world for access to and training in use of the newly revised ACLS, version 5.
Learning outcomes:
- Describe development, underlying theoretical assumptions, appropriate use, and current evidence for ACLS-5/LACLS-5.
- Demonstrate standardized set up, administration and scoring incorporating revisions.
- Identify benefits, challenges and limitations to use of the ACLS-5 in various practice settings to guide interventions focused on safe participation in meaningful, culturally relevant occupations.
Methods: power point presentation, video, live demonstration, guided skill practice, discussion.
